China Steel has pushed China's high-end shipbuilding to the world's first
Time: Feb,25,2023

Every technological breakthrough in China's steel can drive China's related industries to make great strides. It is in the process of breakthroughs in China's steel technology that a large number of industrial clusters in China have developed and come to the forefront of the world in their respective fields.

The latest set of data allows us to witness such breakthrough results.

In the first quarter of this year, China's shipbuilding completion, new orders and handheld orders accounted for 43.5%, 62.9% and 50.8% of the world total in deadweight tonnage respectively, and 43.0%, 62.1% and 45.3% respectively in terms of corrected gross tonnage, ranking first in the world.

The first quarter's data has already surprised us, and the next April's data has been refreshed again. Statistics released by Clarkson Research in the United Kingdom show that the global new ship market in April this year reached 80 new ship orders with a revised gross tonnage of 1.85 million. Among them, China won 76% and South Korea won 20%. The shipbuilding strength between China and South Korea has undergone a shocking reversal, and Chinese shipbuilding companies have far ahead of South Korean shipbuilders in terms of new orders.

In fact, ten years ago, China's shipbuilding industry's orders have reached the world's first, but in terms of high-end shipbuilding, South Korea has been far ahead of China, and one of the important factors is that China's steel materials are facing technical problems stuck in the neck.

Invar steel is an indispensable material for the manufacture of large LNG ships in the shipbuilding industry to prevent cold cracking of hull structures in ultra-low temperature environments. Because the production process is complex and the welding is super difficult, the price of Yin tile steel is about 20 times that of ordinary ship plates.

In the past, only one French company in the world could produce, and all LNG production companies had to purchase Invar steel from French companies. Under this highly monopolistic state, it is conceivable that the price of Yin tile steel far exceeds the price of ordinary ship plates.

But nothing can stop China's steel progress. For the security of China's shipbuilding supply chain and in order to enter the global high-end shipbuilding field, China Baosteel quietly took action, with the goal of developing Yin tile steel produced by Chinese steel mills.

In September 2017, Baosteel Special Steel successfully passed the certification of LNG marine Inwa alloy by French GTT Company, becoming the second qualified supplier in the world after France that can supply thin-film LNG marine Inwa alloy.

When China has the production capacity of Yinwa Steel, China's shipbuilding has a reliable supply chain. This is not only a question of whether there is a problem, but also whether it is good or not. The Yin tile steel supplied by Chinese steel companies to Chinese shipbuilders is good and cheap; The price of Yinwa steel purchased by South Korea is not only higher than that of China, but also spans more than half the world in transportation, and the logistics cost far exceeds the transportation cost of Chinese shipyards.

China's super-large economy is achieving a great leap. China's steel has exceeded the order of 1 billion tons and entered the era of stock development. In the era of stock, China Steel pursues technological breakthroughs and strives to build the source of steel technology, which will surely give birth to more new and more powerful great companies at the forefront of the world.
